Stephen Lewis

Stephen Lewis is a Professor of Pediatrics and Pharmacology at Case Western Reserve University. His past and current NIH/NIDA-funded projects have fostered a multidisciplinary research program in ventilatory processing/autonomic neurophysiology/neuropharmacology. He hasIbeen on several panels for NIDA and Department of Defense Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs. Of relevance to the I4SUD program is his published evidence that their novel L,D-thiol esters and L,D-thiol amides (1) prevent and overcome the adverse effects of opioids such as fentanyl on breathing and arterial blood gas chemistry in rats while maintaining analgesia, and (2) prevent and overcome established physical dependence/addiction/hyperalgesia to fentanyl and morphine in rats.
