Ken Mackie

Ken Mackie is a Distinguished Professor at Indiana University Bloomington. Dr. Mackie is working on a device designed to prevent overdose deaths in high-risk individuals taking prescribed high-dose opioids, especially those who may overdose in unmonitored settings, like while asleep. This device includes sensors to monitor breathing and heart rate, a microneedle patch to deliver naloxone when needed, and an app that tracks vital signs and detects potential overdose risks. If an overdose is detected, the patch automatically administers naloxone and alerts first responders. By focusing on those under medical supervision, they aim to reduce overdose deaths without encouraging recreational opioid use.
