Lauren Micalizzi is an Assistant Professor at Brown University School of Public Health. Dr. Micalizzi is working on a mobile health app to address maternal smoking. Maternal smoking poses severe risks to infants, including sudden infant death syndrome, and despite quitting during pregnancy, nearly 90% of mothers relapse within six months postpartum. Stress, depression, and anxiety are significant factors in this relapse, underscoring the need for practical, flexible, and convenient interventions. This app will deliver personalized, real-time interventions detected via a wearable biosensor during moments of high distress. This "just-in-time" approach offers tailored motivational and relaxation support when needed, helping prevent relapse. By bringing this app to market, Dr. Micalizzi aims to improve maternal-child health outcomes and make interventions more accessible, especially in marginalized communities, bridging gaps in healthcare disparities.
