Marlene Lira is the Director of Research at Workit Health. She is interested in developing an app that addresses two critical challenges: preventing unintentional opioid overdoses and improving access to evidence-based treatment for opioid use disorder. Similar to the "never use alone" hotline, the app will check in on individuals using substances and connect them to emergency services in case of an overdose. Unlike hotlines or wearables, the app will be free, anonymous, and not reliant on human resources. The app will also serve as a treatment connector, helping users find nearby addiction treatment providers based on factors like wait times, accepted insurance, and telemedicine options. By generating revenue through partnerships with treatment centers, the app remains free for users while offering up-to-date, accessible care options across all 50 states. This approach targets high-risk individuals who use alone, providing life-saving support and connecting them to recovery services.
