Wayne Kepner, PhD, MPH is a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Kepner is interested in addressing social isolation and loneliness, which are significant risk factors for both the onset and recurrence of substance use disorders (SUD). Through an app, he aims to support individuals with SUD by helping them connect with peers, friends, and family through timely notifications and calls based on personalized, context-sensitive triggers. By considering factors like recent communication patterns and time of day, the app ensures support is provided when it's most needed and likely to be effective. Commercializing this app could greatly benefit diverse populations, including those in recovery, underserved communities, and individuals lacking access to care, particularly in rural areas.
