Andrew Patrick is a graduate student at Stanford University. He is developing Galence, a novel pharmacological approach to opioid overdose reversal designed to address the challenges posed by fentanyl and other long-acting synthetic opioids. Recognizing that the effects of existing overdose-reversal medications can wear off before the opioids responsible for an overdose, the project aims to develop a single-dose intervention that rapidly restores breathing while providing longer-lasting protection against recurrent opioid toxicity. Galence is being developed in nasal and injectable formulations, with the additional goal of creating a bridge between emergency overdose reversal and ongoing addiction treatment. The innovation aims to improve overdose response across emergency medical services, harm reduction programs, and underserved communities where access to additional doses or immediate medical care may be limited.
