Matthew Swanson

Matthew Swanson is a PhD Candidate at the University of South Florida whose research focuses on developing novel pharmacological approaches to opioid use disorder. His work investigates a newly identified mechanism of opioid receptor signaling that may offer a different way to address withdrawal and opioid tolerance. Building on promising preliminary findings, he is developing small-molecule compounds designed to alleviate withdrawal symptoms while potentially allowing opioid tolerance to decrease without producing respiratory suppression. His research aims to translate this emerging biology into a new therapeutic approach that could expand treatment options for people with opioid use disorder and reduce some of the limitations associated with existing long-term maintenance therapies.
